D CEO Magazine named Kelcy Warren the top honoree in its 2023 Energy Awards program, presenting him with the Legacy Award at an event that drew leaders from across the Dallas-Fort Worth business community. Warren, the executive chairman of Energy Transfer, joined a short list of past recipients that includes Trevor Rees-Jones of Chief Oil and Gas, Scott Sheffield of Pioneer Natural Resources, and the late T. Boone Pickens.

The recognition came at a moment when Energy Transfer‘s scale and reach had grown to encompass nearly 125,000 miles of pipeline across the United States. The company transports roughly one-third of the country’s natural gas and crude oil, a figure that represents approximately 5 percent of global oil supply. That reach is the product of nearly three decades of acquisitions, strategic pivots, and infrastructure development under Kelcy Warren’s leadership.

From Regional Operator to National Infrastructure

Kelcy Warren co-founded Energy Transfer Partners with Ray Davis in the mid-1990s as a modest intrastate natural gas pipeline company. Its first significant expansion came with the 2004 acquisition of TXU Fuel Co.’s midstream assets, which gave it access to the Barnett Shale at the time a booming natural gas producing region with no competing pipeline infrastructure. The company grew rapidly during the Barnett’s peak before navigating the sharp downturn in natural gas prices that followed the 2008-09 recession.

That experience forced the reinvention that Warren has since described as a deliberate choice rather than a reactive one. Through a series of acquisitions beginning in 2011, Energy Transfer broadened its exposure to crude oil, natural gas liquids, and refined products, reducing its dependence on natural gas alone. The Louis Dreyfus midstream deal, a $2 billion transaction secured through an emergency board vote on a Friday night, marked the beginning of that transformation. Kelcy Warren has said his ideal legacy is a simple one: to be remembered as tough but fair, and as a straight shooter. Read this article for additional information.
