And now he’s halfway to catching Roger Federer. That is if Rog-Fed doesn’t win another Slam.

Rafael Nadal excepts the Championship Trophy
Rafa also only needs to win the US Open to complete his career Grand Slam. I hope his knees hold up long enough to complete that, and maybe move up another spot or two on the Slam list. He is currently tied for seventh with Fred Perry, Ken Rosewall, Jimmy Connors, Ivan Lendl,...

Today the men’s semi-finals of Wimbledon will be played. And for the second straight Grand Slam, Roger Federer will not be participating. For those of you not familiar with tennis or Mr. Federer, he had a streak going of 23 straight appearances in Grand Slam semi-finals. If it was anyone other then Federer, and I include the greats like Rod Laver and Pete Sampras in that, this wouldn’t be a big deal. But Federer has so dominated his sport it is amazing to see him fall so quickly like this, especially on his best surface (the grass of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club). Are his days numbered? Well, obviously. Tennis is a young person’s game. There are some still banging around the tour after 30, but not...

As was stated on the NBC broadcast, “order has been restored in Paris.” Rafa Nadal won back his French Open crown. The five time winner will be trying to tie Bjorn Borg’s record of six titles in Paris next year.

What was most impressive about this year was that Rafa didn’t lose one set the whole tournament. And though he has seemed to recovered from his injuries and some drama in his personal life (his parents,...

Roger Federer lost!!

Federer exits the court after losing in the quarter-finals of the French
OK, so he’s lost a few matches in his career. But for those that don’t know, Rog Fed had a streak going. Possibly one of the longest streaks in sports that may be very nearly impossible to break. He made it to 23 (TWENTY-THREE!) straight semi-finals in Grand Slam events. The next closest...

So how about that US Open this year?
Men’s Final
Amazed is all I can say. About halfway through the second set, I figured it was over. Federer was going to pull out his sixth straight US Open victory, and it would be a quick three setter. Boy, was I wrong. And it was kind of surprising to see him lose his cool and argue with the chair umpire. Though I do agree with one point, he should have been allowed to speak instead of being told to shut up.
As for del Potro, it doesn’t come as a total surprise to see him win a Grand Slam. He certainly has shown loads of talent. This may be the first of many for him. Given that he’s from Argentina as well, his clay game may be good enough...

WOW! Watch a match it was. And I don’t have time to go into it now. But there was a part of me that wished Andy Roddick would have won. For that missed it, the last set finished 16-14. It was like watching an NHL playoff game go into double overtime, but in an alternate universe where games don’t normally end up having to go to overtime. Wimbledon is the ONLY tournament, Grand Slam or other, that makes the combatants playout the fifth set instead of using a tiebreaker when it’s 6-6.
What a great match, and a heartbreaking loss for Roddick. At one point all he had to do was make one shot and he’d have a two set lead on Federer. He missed the shot, and the rest is history.
Now it will be interesting...

Unfortunately, it wasn’t much of a match (6-1, 7-6 (1), 6-4). And Rafael Nadal was already at home. But it was wonderful to watch nonetheless. Roger Federer finally won the French Open to complete his career Grand Slam, only the sixth man to do that in the history of the game.

Roger Federer celebrates his French Open victory.
Along with that, he tied Pete Sampras for the most Grand Slam wins in a career, both with 14. Many are now saying, as am I, that Federer is the...

And we only started watching late in the third set. But when the matched started at 4:00 in the morning, what do you expect? But what we saw was enough. These two guys are just incredible! And it’s hard to root against either one, though I was pulling for Federer. More on that later.
So the score was 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-2. I actually thought that Federer was playing much better in the third set, more offensively, attacking Nadal. Nadal was playing well enough to hold him off, but it was still defensive, and not going to get him anywhere. But Federer missed 6 break points, that I know of, and then folded in the tie-breaker, even double-faulting the final point of the set. The next set showed that Federer wasn’t...

I didn’t get to see more then three games of the US Open Final last night, but was ecstatic to see Roger Federer win his 5th in a row, and also put himself one behind tying Pete Sampras for most career Grand Slam victories. Last night was (unlucky) 13 for Roger.

For the record, the second seeded Federer beat Andy Murray, who was seeded sixth, 6-2, 7-5, 6-2.

Venus Williams won the women’s tournament this year. It’s her fifth in eight years. It was also the third time she played against her sister Serena in the Wimbledon Finals, but the first time she has beaten her on the famed grass courts. Marcia and I watched the first set, and the beginning of the second, but had errands to run on Saturday.
I have always liked Venus, and I am glad to see that she won again.

As for the men’s side … WOW!! Rafael Nadal beat five-time defending Wimbledon champ Roger Federer in what had to be one of the best men’s games...
