Here are some pictures of the Munchkin Man. He has been playing with his alphabet and number blocks quite a bit lately. They have become a favorite of his the last couple of weeks.
Nigel’s Hearing Test …
… after months of waiting, finally happened yesterday. The results were very good, even if it took a long time to get them. After using a sonar (I think) type devise to see how the ear drum was registering, they asked either Marcia or I to go into a soundproof booth with Nigel and one of the specialist to play. It didn’t take Nigel long to discover that he was scared of the place.
Marcia went in first, then I relieved her. At one point we gave him his blanket hoping that would help. On the contrary, he buried his face in it. Considering they are looking for facial reactions to the sounds they project into the booth, it turned out to be a struggle. But like...

Following the crazy picture of myself, here are a batch of much cuter pictures, those being of Nigel. (Though the first three also feature that studdly guy from the previous post.)
Marcia, Paula, and I bought Catherine a hat when we were in England in August 2000. During the process of moving, Catherine left it behind at my Mother-In-Law’s. However, it lately has been used quite a bit. By Nigel.
Nigel had his speech evaluation yesterday morning. It was a nice surprise to get a phone call on Wednesday afternoon saying they had an opening for him on Thursday. Marcia mentioned that we were told to get a full hearing test first, before scheduling the speech evaluation. But Marcia was told they didn’t care about the hearing test as of yet, so if we wanted, we could bring him in.
Much to our relief, he is doing better then we thought. Obviously his word count is well behind that of a 26 month old. But his knowledge of words, actions towards words, and his babbling, which they said shows signs of trying to say short sentences, were all in line with his age. Even the dropping of endings in words (like when he says “ca-”...

Here is a group of recent pictures of Nigel.
I forgot to mention in the “What a Day” post that Nigel had an appointment to get his ears cleaned after our time at the dealer. The doctor and nurse both said that neither ear was that bad and were surprised that the woman giving the hearing test the day before was so adamant about them being bad. The doctor also, after talking to us about what he was saying, said that sure, he’s behind on his speech, but really doesn’t think he is that far behind. She says that if we want to be pro-active and have the speech evaluation, then fine, but he’s not bad.
The bad thing however is the availability of appointments with the hearing test facility. Marcia’s ears get rather bad, and she needs to get them...

Yesterday was quite a day for us (meaning, Marcia, Nigel, and myself). Though the events actually started on Monday morning.
On my way to work, and not very far into that commute, the “check engine” light came on in the Jeep Cherokee. I had been dreading a day like this now for a while, but also was expecting it. Given that I was attending a doctor’s appointment with Marcia on Tuesday, I set up an appointment to take the car into a dealer and have it diagnosed. So then yesterday comes around.
After dropping off the car, we headed to Marcia’s appointment. This was very important, because over the course of the last six to eight months, Marcia has been dealing with doctors telling her that they know...

To start off Nigel’s speech evaluation, the doctors wanted him to take a hearing test. That was yesterday afternoon. It started very poorly and ended quickly. However, it appears that it’s an issue of Nigel needing his ears cleaned and/or drained. He has a lot of wax build up, and due to the first test result that they are congested or plugged. Given that Nigel is saying words, and is responding to sound at home, it seems obvious that it’s not any major hearing problems. But they won’t go any further in testing until he has his ears cleaned, which will be later this afternoon. Unfortunately though it could take a while to get back to testing. Marcia made the appointment for yesterday well over a month ago....

I am sure many of you have noticed that Nigel’s hair has been getting rather long. I have been telling Marcia for months that we should probably get it trimmed. Finally, a couple of weeks ago, she agreed that it was time. But given our schedule, we couldn’t take him anywhere until yesterday morning.
The place we went to was recommended to us by Marcia’s sister Paula. It’s a place geared towards kids, having many fun looking seats and a combo DVD/VHS TV. Nigel behaved very well during the process, but it helped that we could put in one of his Mickey Mouse Clubhouse DVD’s that he likes so much. And hats off to Shea who cut his hair. She obviously has a lot of experience with first-timers. She really...
