One of my favorite musicians, Neil Peart, the drummer and lyricist of the rock band Rush, arranged and recorded a new version of the Hockey Night in Canada theme that debuted a couple of nights ago, though traditionally broadcast on Saturdays. Here it is …..

Glad to see that “The Hawk” was elected to the Hall of Fame. Figured his day would come, but what was more interesting was that he was the only player elected this year. For those of you that didn’t hear, some of the writers that have ballots to vote turned in blank ballots. Not sure exactly what they were protesting, but maybe it’s time for them to give up their rights. As it was, Bert Blyleven just missed getting voted in, like he only needed two of the eight (from what I heard) idiots that put in blank ballots to vote for him and he would have made it. The one thing that makes me feel good about it though is that he should make it next year. Roberto Alomar was one that I...
Had a great time going to the Flyers-Lightning game a couple of days ago with my Uncle Steve and cousin Adam. I met them at the TGIFridays across from the hotel they were staying at, then we headed out to the arena. For the first time EVER, I face very little traffic on the Schuylkill (I-76) which made it all the better.
The Flyers had some really nice goals, and seemed to be firing on all cylinders. To help out, the Lightning missed some good opportunities to keep it closer. But the biggest winner of the game was the Phillies. Every moment the PA announcer and the video screen had, they were touting the Phillies. As it was, since the arena is basically kitty corner from the baseball stadium, and because Game 5 of the World Series...
So I’m heading out to the Flyers game tonight. Might be a bit crazy, since the Wachovia Arena is basically next door to Citizens Bank Park. So we will competing for traffic space with the World Series crowd.
My Uncle Steve and cousin Adam are in town. They will be touring Drexel University this afternoon. Then they are taking me to the Flyers game against the Lightning. It will be my fifth Flyers game in Philly. (Marcia and I saw them play the Wings at the Joe many years back, and my Dad took my brothers and I to see the Wings and Flyers back in the late 80’s.) The first one I attended was before I even lived out in PA. And though my mind has been on baseball pretty much the last five months, I still expect to have...
Tigers
Very disappointed to see the Tigers blow a three game lead with only four games left. I watched the tiebreaker game in it’s entirety. Even though my boys lost, I have to say that it was a very, very exciting game. Hopefully we will see more like this throughout the playoffs.
Cardinals
Hard to believe the Cardinals were swept out of the playoffs. Like most where thinking, including Roger, I figured the Cards were the team to beat in the NL. Yet the Dodgers now have advanced to the NLCS two years straight by sweeping the favorite in the LDS. Though this year they could have been considered the favorite based on record.
Being unemployed, and having a newborn, you tend to lose track of the days.
Parents
My parents are heading out to Pennsylvania to spend some time with their newest grandchild today. They will be here through Friday. We are looking forward to seeing them again. As it stands, if I am not employed by Thanksgiving, we will not be making the trek out to Michigan for Christmas. So this may be the last time we see them in a while.
Lions
Not that I am a huge NFL fan to begin with, and though from Detroit and clinging to my baseball and hockey loyalties, I am not a Lions fan. But in some respects, I am excited a bit this year. I think that the team’s direction, for the first time...
So I forgot to post that we were leaving for Detroit. We arrived yesterday early afternoon. Lots of rain on the first part through PA.
I will eventually catch up with everything. Comments have been made that I haven’t had time to follow up with. But two I want to remark here quickly.
Roger: As embarrassed as I am to say this, I don’t know the story about the Louisville Slugger. However, I did work with a guy during my six month in Louisville who was a grandson or great-grandson of the Hillerich family. If I remember correctly, he didn’t want to get into the “family business”. He was an excellent project manager though.
John: When I read the news of Hossa signing with the Hawks in the...
So what is sadder to this Red Wings’ fan then seeing the names of the 2008-2009 Pittsburgh Penguins engraved on the Stanley Cup? Well, it’s something that probably most hockey fans are still sad about, or maybe just PO’d.
Here it is …..
What a wonderful reminder, for years to come, of the stupidity that we had to put up with. But then again, maybe it’s good that it’s there. Then every team that wins, or has won, the Cup since can remember it vividly the next time they...
