Other then one incident, our vacation turned out to be a great get-away. We didn’t see all that we wanted to, and part of that was to save money, but we did make sure that we enjoyed our time. It all started with the drive down to Virginia, where we left five minutes ahead of schedule. A couple of years ago my Mother-in-Law traveled with us to Virginia, and she had brought along a crossword puzzle. With us helping her fill in the answers, we realized how it helped pass the time. We had bought a couple of books to bring with us, and Marcia started one just as we got on the beltway around Washington, DC. It seemed that in no time we were just miles north of the exit for Ashland, Virginia. With little traffic and the crossword puzzles...

Joyous Buschna!
I am a day late, but I hope all of you had a Joyous Buschna.
Of course, many of you don’t know what Buschna is. (Pronounced BUSH-nah) Buschna is the made-up holiday for those of us with Eastern European heritage. It is the day when we go out and feast, mostly on sausage and potatoes and sauerkraut, and wash it all down with a good beer.
Though quite honestly, anyone can celebrate Buschna, and we welcome all that want to. The whole idea was to get a holiday in August (which doesn’t have any) to fill the void between July 4th and Labor Day. So mark August 15th on your calendar and remember to wish everyone a Joyous Buschna next year!

Friday
After I got home from work, Marcia, Nigel, and I headed down to see our friends Andy and Yvonne. It has been a while since we have seen them, especially Yvonne who has been traveling for her “second job.” (She’s a writer.) Nigel had been in a cranky mood for much of the day, and it sort of continued while we were visiting. The biggest issue now is that anything he can reach is something that he must have, therefore if you take it away from him the tantrums start. They don’t necessarily last long, especially since we brought his blocks along, which he loves.
We ordered out from a local steakhouse, though I think it may be a chain. It was a great choice since both Marcia and...

Over the course of the last two weeks I have had the opportunity to try some different beers. All of them were had during my travels, and sadly only one is theoretically obtainable here back at home.

During my trip to Glens Falls, New York for work, we stayed in a hotel that was a two minute walk from a local brew pub. That being Davidson Brothers’. We ended up going there both nights for dinner. The chief engineer that I work for has the same taste in beer that I do, so it was a no-brainer for us. The second night was the choice of the Plant Manager who arranged the get-together with the contractors in...

Here are the answers to the most recent edition of “Ask Scooter Anything.” As before, these are my opinions and thoughts and are not meant to offend. Unless of course I put down any crabby New York Yankees’ fans. In this case though, I don’t, so they are off the hook this time.

As always, Roger asks some tough questions. But I like that. Here are his questions and my answers.
What is your sense of God? Personal, hands on deity or impersonal lurker?
I put these two together, because it seemed that was meant. And these have to be the...

Been a while, but I have been trying some new beers as of late. Though one was really not new, but rebranded and changed just a bit (I believe).
Dave Johnson’s Tripel
Dave is a friend of my Uncle Steve. I have had the great fortune of drinking a couple of Dave’s beers a couple of years ago when we visited my aunt and uncle in Virginia. Dave’s tripel is not quite as good as Victory’s Golden Monkey, however I would choose it over Dragonmead’s Final Absolution which has won an award or two.
Dave Johnson’s Mystery Banana Beer
I forget what my uncle said this one actually was, and the two bottles of it I had didn’t have labels. My uncle said...

Our friends down the street (almost literally) in Easton, Pennsylvania at the Weyerbacher Brewery like to do something absolutely wonderful with their best beers. After brewing them, instead of aging them (if needed) the usual way and bottling them up, they put them into oak bourbon casks to age. They have done this a few times, and I have been able to grab a bottle of two earlier ones.
Old Heathen Stout made into Heresy (my POST about it)
Clapping For Nigel
Or to be more correct, Nigel is clapping. He is not really making any noise, it’s very soft, more like making the motions of clapping. But he gets a big smile on his face when we ask him to clap and do it along with him. That smile is the proud look that he knows he’s doing something that is good and will give him praise.
It started a couple of days ago when Nigel was taking two of his blocks and hitting them together. Marcia noticed this and starting clapping along with him. Soon he dropped the blocks and Marcia started clapping to see if he would still move his hands that way without the blocks. Sure enough he did.
It is truly amazing to watch your child grow and...

Since being on antibiotics for my cyst, I haven’t had a beer. So ironically I am going to post about some I have had recently.
Bell’s Porter - A rather ho-hum porter. I got a six pack the last time I was in Detroit. It was good given the winter months, but nothing exciting or new.
Great Divide Saint Bridget’s Porter - See above. Except substitute picking up a six pack in Detroit to having one at David and Catherine’s over a month ago.
Atwater Dunkel - I picked this one up (and the beer below) at a cool shop in Fountain Hill, Pennsylvania. It is a brewery out of Detroit that I have wanted to try for a long time that I have never found. Even...

Nigel Moments
Now that Nigel’s personality is developing, there are certain things that he does that make a father smile.
Lately it has been watching Nigel walk with no prodding from either Marcia or I, or anyone else for that matter. He still wants to hold someone’s hand when walking around the house. But in the fenced off area that we have for him now in the living room, he’s constantly wandering around on his own now.
Another one is when watching “Classical Baby” (yes, he still loves those videos), sometimes he will get down off the lap of either Marcia or I, then walk over to the piano and start “playing.” Boy, is he Marcia’s son or what?
Another...
