For two teams the season is already two games old. And quite a few other teams opened up last night. But I forgot to post my pick. Three times since the early 90’s I have correctly picked the Stanley Cup Champion at the start of the season. In 1996 with the Colorado Avalanche. In 1998 with the Red Wings. And in 2006 with the Anaheim Ducks. Here’s hoping that I get it right again (especially since it’s a pattern).
My pick to win the Cup this year is the Detroit Red Wings. Yeah, it’s easy picking them. They just won the Cup and got even better by adding Marian Hossa and Ty Conklin. But even in thinking about it, it’s tough to pick against them (though both the Duck and San Jose Sharks were very close behind in my thinking through this).

Ok…. No suprise here. So my picks invove the Chicago Blackhaws (Youth and speed) & the Pittsburgh Penguins. (Sid the Kid & last year behind them). As a long shot…. I always fear any team Mike Keenan coachs.

That’s the pattern I am referring to. I correctly picked a team to win the Cup. The following year the Wings win it. Then I pick them to repeat. Last time it worked.

Oh, and John … Keenan would be my first candidate to be fired during the season. I don’t think he is on top of the game as he was in the 80’s and 90’s.
