What’s With All The Champagne? My Pick

A few weeks ago, maybe more, Marcia and I watched “The Good Shepherd”, starring Matt Damon, along with Angelina Jolie, John Tuturro, Alec Baldwin, Tammy Blanchard, Billy Crudup, Robert De Niro (who also directed), Keir Dullea, Michael Gambon, William Hurt, and Lee Pace.

The description of this film on Amazon.Com, written by Jae-Ha Kim states that this is a complicated movie. How very true, in my opinion. It wasn’t until looking through plot descriptions (trying to figure out which one to post … and I won’t be posting any of them), that I learned the connection between a few plot points and what it was about. I was disappointed in myself for having to find out this way, but found I am not alone.

Damon plays Edward Wilson, who eventually helps put together the CIA, but at points is working for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). He’s a Yale grad, member of the Skull and Bones Society, married to a Senator’s (Dullea) daughter (Jolie), and has to deal with many others in becoming who he is. And who he is, is a ruthlessly devoted employee of the country. He is involved in the Bay of Pigs invasion, and is looking for the leak that led to it’s failure. Along with this, the movie shows flashbacks of Wilson’s life leading up to this moment.

Again, it’s a complicated movie. There is a lot of betrayal going around. There is a lot of political games. There is a lot of spy games, too. It was hard to know who was working for and/or backstabbing who. And the acting wasn’t jumping out either, so it made the two hour and forty minute movie hard to sit through. It was interesting enough leading Marcia and I to watch all of it and hope that things would come together. But by the time the movie ended, I still had many questions and knew I missed a lot.

I wouldn’t say that the movie was terrible, but it certainly wasn’t easily accessible.
