This past weekend Marcia and I watched the movie version of “Persepolis”. I recently read and REVIEWED the book.

As with the book, the film follows Marjane Satrapi’s life from about the age of 10 (1978), living in Tehran, Iran, to her parents moving her to Vienna, Austria to get away from the war with Iraq, back to her return and marriage in Tehran at the age of 21.
Satrapi’s book, though non-fiction, would be best described as a graphic novel. The movie, as it should be, is animated with Satrapi leading and directing the artwork. And even though the book was a very quick read, there were still parts that were not in the movie. Clocking in at just a couple minutes over an hour and a half, they could have kept most of those parts in and still kept it well under two hours. But some of it too was best left aside for cinematic viewing pleasure.
All in all and very good rendition of the book. You can watch the movie an not miss too much of what is going on, though one part I thought could have used more attention was at the beginning when Marjane thought she was going to be a prophet and spoke often with God. The book focused on this very well, where the movie mentioned it in passing, though still had a few of her discussions with God.
Like the book, the movie is an entertaining history lesson, and a good look at the inside of the oppression that went on during that time in Iran.
