I had been hoping the Wings would sign Mats Sundin to help the scoring department. Sure, the Wings won the Cup, but other then Zetterberg and Datsyuk’s steady playmaking, they haven’t had anyone that could steal a game with super scoring powress since Sergei Fedorov left for greener pastures in 2003 (he once scored all five goals in an OT 5-4 victory over the Capitals). Sundin would have been a nice addition, especially considering he’s pretty good on both sides of the puck. Instead the Wings got the prize of the free agent pool: Marian Hossa. I was shocked to see this NEWS.

Hossa leaves a Pittsburgh team that was willing to give him about the same amount of money the Wings gave him ($7.4 million), but for more then the one year he signed with in Detroit. I am surprised by this, because he could have been a key ingredient to leading the Pens back to the Cup Finals. Maybe he felt that the Wings had a better chance of repeating their trip there then the Pens. Hossa also had (reportedly, and probably true) much higher offers then this from the likes of the Canucks and Oilers. It will be interesting to see what he has to say about this.

I am shocked, seeing that Hossa isn’t much of a defensive forward (even with Fedorov’s scoring touch, he was one of the best defensive forwards during his heydays). However, even with that liability, I am excited to see what he can do in Hockeytown.

This will also help Marcia in rooting for the Red Wings, now that a Slovak is playing for them.
