I haven’t been able to try any new brews lately. Part of that is trying to save money. I bought two cases of beer in December. I usually only allow myself one case a month. However, I made these two stretch. And they are still being stretched. Come the first of April I will be down to the last bottle of those two cases. That leads to the second problem in not trying anything new lately: not having anywhere close that sells a wide selection by anything other then a case. There is one place that I know of, but it’s a good 15 to 20 minutes away, and it’s always out of the way. Hopefully I will get back there. But until then I am tethered by what the local seller has in cases, and I only stick with what I know I like in those circumstances.
But my new brew slump changed on St. Patrick’s Day. My brother-in-law David gave me three bottles, one which I drank that evening with dinner, of his own home brew, Zog’s Grog Uncle Tupelo Honey Oatmeal Stout. (Say that ten times fast!)
You can read David’s POST about it, including comments from his brother Brian, an award winning home brewer himself. (You can check out his web site Fool’s Circle.) I agree with all that was said by both. Especially the lingering honey aftertaste. Very nice. Brian also suggested to pour more aggressively to get a better head, and I tried that with the last one (last night), but still had issues getting anything close to a half an inch.
David mentions that this recipe could be “tightened up” to be made better, and that is true. However, I think he should be very proud of what he did in just his second time out. Uncle Tupelo is a damn good stout in general. With the mid-level alcohol content, it makes it a great cold weather brew that won’t put you on your butt.
