Here’s another one that I forgot to post about. One afternoon while visiting my family during the Christmas holiday, I (sort of ) watched “I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry” with my parents. For those that don’t know, it stars Adam Sandler and Kevin James.

The movie is about fellow firefighters Chuck and Larry, who are also very good friends away from the job. Chuck is single and a womanizer, and Larry is a widower with two children. After an accident on the job (from a dare between the two) hospitalizes both of them, Larry tries to name his two children beneficiaries to his pension, but is told that he can’t do that. He can only name a spouse, which includes a domestic partner if in a same sex relationship. Since Larry saved Chuck’s life in the accident, he calls in the favor for the two of them to get “married” in Niagara Falls.
Jessica Biel plays Chuck and Larry’s lawyer when they are being watched by the city to make sure their relationship isn’t fraudulent, and Steve Buscemi plays the guy checking in on them (in his typical creepy, weird, and annoying way).
I really wasn’t too interested in watching it. That’s why I said I “sort of” watched the movie, while playing with my new Freecell hand held game. I had heard that this script banged around the movie industry for a long time with many different actors attached to the project before finally settling with Sandler and James. And the two of them were part of the reason I didn’t want to watch it. I didn’t think that Sandler was right for the role (especially after seeing some of the trailers), and I am not a big fan of James. Both proved me wrong. Not overwhelmingly, but enough to say that it was better then expected.
James did a really good job with handling the comedy needed. The macho-ism for certain scenes, and trying to be convincing in his relationship with Chuck, along with being a very loving and caring father to his children, and seeing that he was doing this for their benefit. Part of the reason I didn’t think Sandler was right for the role was seeing some of the trailers. Fortunately there were better parts in the movie that were not shown in the trailers.
Good thing I didn’t totally give into my initial impression and watched the movie.
