The two and a half (plus) year reign is over. For the first time since the 2005 Australian Open, a name other then Federer or Nadal will go on a mens’ Grand Slam trophy. Novak Djokovic won the Aussie Open this past weekend (his first Grand Slam in his second try). He is slowly proving to be a true contender. As much as I love Federer, I am glad that someone else can hang with him and Nadal. It will make this tennis season very interesting. (Though I still don’t think anyone can beat Federer at Wimbledon.)
And Maria Sharapova came back from injuries the last couple of years to prove she is still a true threat. She won her third Grand Slam this past weekend. She is now only short a French Open title to complete a career Grand Slam.

Given the time difference, Marcia and I watched hardly any of the Australian Open this year. And of the two finals, we only saw the fourth set tie-breaker where Djokovic won the title. My mother-in-law has the Tennis Channel with her cable package, but it is only available on the TV downstairs. And even if it was on the TV in the living room, Nigel would make it tough to watch any of it to begin with. This spring we hope to hit the courts again ourselves, and maybe Nigel will get interested in the game as he gets older. Either that, or he will start understanding that Mommy and Daddy need time to watch tennis instead of Mickey Mouse.

I just never watch the Aussuie open. I don’t know why. I’ve watch the French a little, Wimbledon quite a bit and the US Open a LOT, though less since the chiild, and since the wife isn’t all that interested.

I was really pleased that Djokovic won. Tsonger put me off by not acknowledging how well Djokovic had played, and instead implied that he only won because Federer played badly.
