Marcia, Nigel, and I made our way home from Michigan yesterday. Given it was a Sunday before a holiday, the roads were hardly traveled. It wasn’t until we were about 40 miles from home did we start to experience a bit of traffic.

Eventually I will catch up with pictures and a wrap-up of our vacation. I also have two book reviews and a movie review to post.

In the meantime, Roger set up another episode of “Ask Roger Anything”, and he answers my questions HERE and HERE.

Recently I finished listening to the audio version of the book “True North” by Jim Harrison. For those that don’t know (like myself until after starting this book), Harrison is the author of two novellas that eventually were made into movies (“Revenge” starring Kevin Costner, Anthony Quinn, and Madeleine Stowe and “Legends of the Fall” starring Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins, and Aidan Quinn).

The reason I picked this one was because of location. The story revolves around a family from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

An epic tale that pits a son against the legacy...

Later today, around 2:00 or so, Marcia, Nigel and I will be heading out to Michigan to spend nine days with my family. We are looking forward to getting out there. The last two times we where in Michigan were for funerals. But this will be the first time we drive out there since last Christmas. That is something we are not really too interested in dealing with, but at least we will be cutting the drive out in half.

We are also armed with a portable DVD player this time. It should keep Nigel well occupied during the trip. And I had hoped to find an iPod radio frequency adapter that I felt comfortable with, and wasn’t too expensive, but I couldn’t. We are taking Marcia’s car out there, and it doesn’t have...

On Sunday afternoon, Marcia and I watched the movie “The Namesake” starring Kal Penn, Irfan Khan, and Tabu.

namesake-movie.jpg

The movie is based on the novel of the same name written by Jhumpa Lahiri. I read and REVIEWED it a little over a year ago.

Now, most movies that say the story is “based” on the book, it means that there were some/many creative liberties taken to make it more “Hollywood” for viewers to enjoy. This movie didn’t stray hardly, if at all, from the book. It follows the Ganguli...

Wikipedia is a great site to get information, and I often link to it. There is a flaw to the system though, which also makes the site so good: anyone can edit the information.

I was bored and looking over some NBA stats (like I said, I was bored), and found out that the owner of the Phoenix Suns, Jerry Colangelo, coached a few of their games. I was surprised by this and went to Wikipedia to see what his background was. I eventually found out that he was the team’s first general manager, and stepped in as coach a couple of times. This all happened almost 20 years before he would actually buy the team.

So I scrolled down to the “Award” section and found two very interesting...

On Saturday afternoon, I finished reading “The Alienist” by Caleb Carr.

alienist.gif

The story is told from the first-person perspective, that being from John Schuyler Moore, a writer for the New York Times. It takes place in 1896 in Manhattan. Two close friends of Moore’s, back from their college days, are alienist Laszlo Kreizler (alienist was a term used at the time for one that treated those with mental illnesses) and the head of the New York City Police Board of Commissioners Theodore Roosevelt (yes, the real Teddy Roosevelt). As the story begins, Roosevelt calls Kreizler and Moore together to...

Here is a group of pictures of the Munchkin Man. Most of these have been taken over the course of the last two weeks.

Will It Make A Big Difference?
Even though Marcia has been batted around by doctors like they were using her as a volleyball, she has been making strides in going further in trying to solve her migraines. Some of the more recent doctors believe that a good portion of her migraines come from a sleeping disorder of some sort (she is continually tense, even when sleeping), because she grinds her teeth very badly, as well as clenching in her sleep. They also feel it is tied to her TMJ.

One doctor though has fixed her up with an appliance to use while sleeping. It looks like a piece of chewed gum, wadded up, and put on her front two bottom teeth. This morning Marcia said that she has noticed a significant difference...

Ah, Metallica. Maybe you wouldn’t have pegged me for a fan. But I am. Sure, it took me a while. I was first introduced to Metallica by my high school buddy, George. He was a real nice guy, and not someone you might think of as a metal-head. But Metallica was some of the more mellow stuff he listened to. He kept giving me this album and “Ride...
