Last night I finished reading “The History of Love” by Nicole Krauss. I had seen this book pop up a lot on Amazon.Com, sometimes in my recommendations. To be honest, seeing the title and a female’s name for author, I never looked at it. I figured it wasn’t for me. Finally, one day a couple of weeks ago, I decided to see what it was all about. Glad I did. I soon found a copy of the UK version (though from someone in the US) at BookMooch, and quickly grabbed it.

For a plot synopsis, here is a review (without spoilers that ruin anything) written by Gisele Toueg that is listed under the description...

NHL No Longer the Only Ones
The National Lacrosse League, or the NLL, the indoor lacrosse league with teams in the US and Canada, canceled their upcoming season because of a labor dispute with the players’ union. Though not on quite on the same scale as the NHL, it is still interesting that this would happen. You see, unlike the NHL when they canceled their season, the NLL was up-and-coming, gaining popularity. Also, they weren’t supposed to start their season until the day after Christmas. So they could have still negotiated for another two months! Oh well. The only reason this effects me is that I kind of like the sport, and I was in a fantasy league last season and we were going to do it again this...

Radiohead - “In Rainbows”
Radiohead doesn’t have a recording contract with any record label, however have recorded a new album. They have released it online, available for download. They also let the consumer “name the price.” Yes, free, as in no charge, is an option. I may be looked at unfavorably, but that’s the price I chose. (Added note, there is a version of the album that you can buy for a fixed price that includes an actual CD, along with extra tracks and many extra items.)
I am not really a Radiohead fan. I have a copy of “OK Computer”, and it’s OK. Some of it, to my ears, had potential. So I figured since I had nothing to lose on this new...

Our Friday tradition of Pizza Night has come back, but on a less frequent scale. We basically have one a month, starting last month. As always, it was great to see everyone again. On the other hand I wanted to spend more time with everyone, maybe even play a game like we have done so many times. However, Nigel was overtired. He wasn’t acting cranky, but the slightest little fall from running into someone or David and Catherine’s dog Teddy, would send a flood of tears. He usually over-reacts when he is overtired. (Marcia is teaching three classes of home schooled students every other Friday, and those days Nigel usually misses his naps, though he gets to play with a lot of other children.) Nigel did really bump his head...

Last night I finished reading “The Scar” by China Mieville. This is the third novel of Mieville’s I have read, which also happens to be his third novel.

Here is a rundown on some of the major plot points that can be revealed before reading it, thanks to Amazon.Com:
“The Scar” begins with Mieville’s frantic heroine, Bellis Coldwine, fleeing her beloved New Crobuzon in the peripheral wake of events relayed in “Perdidio Street Station”. But her voyage to the colony of Nova Esperium is cut short when she is shanghaied and stranded on Armada, a legendary floating...

I don’t know why, but I find this fun. And since it’s been a few months since the last time, I figured now would be a good time to do it.
As before, you can ask me anything, and I have to answer. You may not like the answer, but that’s your problem, not mine.
What the really means is if you ask a smarta** question, you will probably get a smarta** answer.
Write questions as comments to this post. I’ll start answering questions in about a week.

Marcia and I weren’t sure what we wanted to get Nigel for his birthday present. We figured that he would probably get a lot of clothes, which we sure wouldn’t mind. Especially since he is still at an age where that’s not considered a “bummer.” So I talked Marcia into getting him a riding toy for outside. And I suggested that we give it to him early, since the weather has been unseasonably warm. Even when it does get cooler, he should be able to get some enjoyment out of it.
We got him the Backyardigans version because it is made for many stages. You can see the big handle in the back so adults can push their children. It is rather easy to take off, so later when he can peddle he won’t have...

Yesterday afternoon, Marcia and I watched “The Upside of Anger” starring Joan Allen and Kevin Costner.

I must be totally honest, though I am a bit of a Costner fan, the only reason I wanted to see this movie was because it was filmed in the Detroit area. Some of the scenes were even shot at WRIF, a famous radio station that I used to listen to while living in Detroit. Costner’s character is a former Detroit Tiger who now does a radio show. Also making a few appearances is the infamous Arthur Penhallow. To those of...

He’s Officially A Boy
Nigel took a big step towards being a little boy yesterday. While walking (actually running) around with Marcia outside in the afternoon, he fell and skinned his knees.

I suspect we have a couple of years before he starts bringing insects and frogs into the house for us to see.
Dead Mouse
However, Nigel doesn’t need to bring them in for us to already have them in the house. Yesterday afternoon, Marcia went to do some laundry and found...
