Like is my habit, I recently watched “Major League” which aired on some cable station a couple of weekends ago. I just can’t get enough of baseball movies. “Field of Dreams”, “The Natural”, “Bull Durham”, “Major League”, “Eight Men Out”, “A League of Their Own”, etc. And they provide some of the best movie quotes that I have heard. (It helps being a fan of the game.)

When watching “Major League” I was reminded of a scene that I hadn’t watched in a while between Pedro Cerrano (Dennis Haysbert) and Eddie Harris (Chelcie Ross). It is when the team finds out about Cerrano’s voodoo worship with him asking Jobu to help him hit curve balls. Veteran pitcher Harris steps in and reminds Pedro that there is maybe someone else he should ask for help.

Pedro Cerrano: Bats, they are sick. I cannot hit curveball. Straightball I hit it very much. Curveball, bats are afraid. I ask Jobu to come, take fear from bats. I offer him cigar, rum. He will come.

Eddie Harris: You know you might think about taking Jesus Christ as your savior instead of fooling around with all this stuff.

Pedro Cerrano: Jesus (HAY-ZOOS), I like him very much. But he no help with curveball.

Eddie Harris: You trying to say Jesus Christ can’t hit a curveball?

Of course the hi-jinx continues later with Cerrano disrupting a team prayer by blowing something up to “wake up bats” before opening day. And then Harris steals Jobu’s rum before warm-ups another day and promptly gets hit in the head with a bat.

Their are flaws with the movie, but it’s still very funny.

I’m right there with you when it comes to watching a good baseball movie. My favorite I would have to say is Field of Dreams. But one that I really enjoyed that kind of went under the radar was 61. The story of Roger Maris. I thought that movie was excellent and I remember watching the making of that movie as they used the old Tiger Stadium to replicate old Yankee stadium.

I was flipping through the TV a few nights ago and saw that A League Of Their Own was on. I didn’t watch but a view minutes ago (already seen it a few times) but one of my favorite movie quotes comes from here when Tom Hank’s character states these priceless words, “Theres no Crying in Baseball”

I wonder if there will be a movie in years to come about Barry Bonds. With the allegations of steriod use and the known side effect of one’s head getting larger, maybe they could get one of those Macy day floats to play the role of Barry.

Yes, “61*” is a great movie, too. I thought Barry Pepper as Maris was a good choice. and whoever played Mickey Mantle was excellent as well. (And who could forget Anthony Michael Hall as Whitey Ford?!) I saw a bit of that making-of documentary as well.

I also think that “No crying in baseball” is great. I posted it a while back.
