Red Wings Beat Predators
I forgot the game was on Versus last night. I had wanted to see it. A big showdown between the two best records in the Western Conference AND the Central Division. The winner of the division will more then likely get the first seed, while the other settles for the fourth. Well, the Wings have really handed it to the Preds this year and continued last night with a 2-1 WIN.
According to ESPN’s web site, the Wings take over first place in the division and conference. This is still important for seeding, but this year the difference is between opening with Dallas (the fifth seed currently) or Calgary (the eighth seed currently) in the first round, which isn’t that big of a disparity.
Regardless of the outcome, it’s good to see the Wings handling the Preds so well.
Canes and Oilers About To Make History?
An interesting write-up from Damien Cox in his COLUMN this morning. The Carolina Hurricanes and Edmonton Oilers could become the first teams in NHL history to play against each other in the Stanley Cup Finals one year, and both miss the playoffs the next. The Oilers have already reserved their mid April tee times, and the Canes are working on theirs.
Like Cox points out, this is rather amazing from the Canes stand point. Nobody expected to see the Oilers in the playoffs again this year (or at least I didn’t). But the Canes still had most of their players returning. Sure, Doug Weight and Mark Recchi both went back to the teams the Canes got them from, but they were mid-season or trade deadline deals. Their leadership and experience I am sure helped, but the Canes dominated most of the season. And other then Aaron Ward signing with the Rangers (then getting traded to the Bruins), everyone else was back. So why so bad?
I don’t know, but the Canes did this last time they went to the Finals. After getting beat by the Wings in 2002, they failed to reach the playoffs the next year. So I don’t see them being down for long. And who knows, they still may sneak into the playoffs yet.
The Back
My back continues to heal. It is doing pretty good actually. The only problem I am having is raw skin for the constant new bandages. One spot got so raw that it started to bleed. Marcia has been adjusting the position of them to keep the problem to a minimum though. It’s just funny how something that is helping is actually causing the only pain and discomfort.
Trip To Keystone
As part of my MSHA training for work, I got to see a cement mill yesterday afternoon. It was the Keystone Portland Cement plant in Bath, PA about 10 minutes from our office. Part of the plant was down for maintenance, so we got to see things up close, but not running. It was quite an experience though. Especially the control room. The guy running it was very friendly and very willing to answer questions and show us what was happening.
Trip To DC
Marcia, Nigel, and I will be heading down to our Nation’s Capitol this weekend for my cousin Sarah’s wedding. This will be my first trip to DC, though I have driven around the beltway about every summer since moving to PA.
We won’t really have any time to see anything, but on the other hand will be seeing some of my family, especially my Mom and Dad. We plan on going to dinner with them tonight when we all get settled in.
They’re Baaaaaack

One of my two favorite bands (Rush) release their new album “Snakes & Arrows” in one months time.

Looking forward to it, but with caution. Their last album “Vapor Trails” was hot and cold. And the one song (”Far Cry”) that I have heard from the new album (thanks David!) is growing on me, but doesn’t give me feelings that it’s going to be extraordinarily better.
Being the Rush fanboy that I am, I suspect I will still enjoy the album on some level. It wasn’t like “Vapor Trails” was awful. But after “Counterparts” they haven’t had a really strong showing.
