Favorite Albums - Part 46 Walking Before Crawling
Jan 14

Internet friend Sarah has TAGGED those that read her BLOG to answer the meme. It about the arts. So here is my go at it.

Name a book that you want to share so much that you keep giving away copies:
“The Lions of Al-Rassan” by Guy Gavriel Kay. It is still probably my favorite book. The book, and most of what Kay writes, it considered fantasy, but this book can certainly be enjoyed by those that don’t read genre fiction. It can almost be seen as historical fiction, since it generally follows medieval Spain. You can read my REVIEW of it from a few years ago. I have given a copy of this book to at least three or four people.

Name a piece of music that changed the way you listen to music:
The song “Close to the Edge” by the band Yes. I was about 14 years old when I heard it. I had pretty much at that point only listened to music that was on the Top 40 radio stations. This song opened my ears to a whole world of music that I didn’t even know could exist. I even stated this fact (the question here in this meme) in my POST about the album this song is from, one of my series of Favorite Albums.

Name a film you can watch again and again without fatigue:
There are many. But to name a few; “Cold Mountain”, “Field of Dreams”, “The Hunt for Red October”, all “Star Wars” movies, and all “The Lord of the Rings” movies. There is something about the movie “Cold Mountain”, other then Nicole Kidman, that just grabs me every time. “Field of Dreams” is just a wonderful movie, and any baseball fan will tell you so. I don’t know why I like “The Hunt for Red October” so much, but I just do. I like Harrison Ford, but I still think Alec Baldwin was better as Jack Ryan. And there isn’t anything to be explained about “Star Wars” and “The Lord of the Rings” if you know me and my tastes. ; )

Name a performer for whom you suspend all disbelief:
This is tough. There are some actors that make it hard for you to believe that it’s the same person playing such different roles. I was just reminded of that watching some episodes of “Blackadder” with Hugh Laurie. (Thanks Roger!) But if we are talking stage act, then it’s a tie between the rock bands Yes and Rush. With Yes, even though these guys are in their late 50’s (with lead singer Jon Anderson already passing the big 6-0), they are still absolutely amazing live. The magic continues even over 35 years later. And I just love watching Rush live, because you get to see all sides of their personalities.

Name a work of art you’d like to live with:
Not sure. Though for a couple of reasons I have a copy of Fernand Léger’s painting “Mechanical Element” hanging up at my desk at work.

Name a work of fiction which has penetrated your real life:
Tough call. As much as I loved “The Lions of Al-Rassan” I don’t think it has penetrated my life. Probably the one that has the most is “Middlesex” by Jeffery Eugenides. It’s not that I can relate with the characters (other then living in the Detroit area), but because the audio book that Marcia and I listened to was so well done, and the story was so good, that we can’t help but talk about it every once in a while, now a couple of years after listening to it. As expected, you can read my REVIEW here on the site.

Name a punch line that always makes you laugh:
Another tough call. Sarah chose Michael Palin’s line as Cardinal Ximinez from a sketch on Monty Python, “NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition!” I can’t think of any others right now, so I will steal hers.

Tagging:
So I am supposed to tag others. I again will steal Sarah’s idea and say that if you read this, then considered yourself tagged.
