Happy Birthday Mom! Awaiting Departure
Nov 30

My Grandfather died this morning.

From what I was told he also caught the flu that most of the family got this past weekend. He got up early in the morning to go to the bathroom and collapsed.

My Grandfather always seemed to be a strong man. My early memories of him was a broad-chested man who knew how to take care of things. He served in World War II. (I believe he spent most of his service days in Italy and north Africa.) In the picture of his squad (or whatever the correct word is) he was easy to pick out because he seemed so much bigger then others, almost like a tank amongst regular sized cars. About 6 years ago he had triple by-pass surgery. This was the first sign to me that he was in fact a fragile human being. More recently his short term memory started failing. And then this past summer he was given a pacemaker. When I saw him on Thanksgiving, you could see how much he had withered away. It crossed my mind how much longer he would be with us, but never thought it would only be a couple more days. I am so glad that I got to see him one last time, and that he got to see Nigel, too. Just wished I had spent more time talking to him on Thanksgiving.

Rest in peace Grandpa.

I’m really sorry about your loss Scott, losing a loved one no matter their age is always so damned hard.
