I experienced my first “Oops!” with a BookMooch member. It wasn’t a bad experience, but it turned out to be even better.
The member is a female that goes by the username DEWEY (don’t want to give her real name, but still want to give her kudos). I was looking for a hardcover edition of “The Alienist” by Caleb Carr, and luck would have it that there was a copy available from her. However, she accidently listed it as a hardcover when it was really a mass market paperback.
Now BookMooch lets you give feedback. You gave give one of three ratings: +1, 0, or -1. I gave her a 0 because it wasn’t the edition that was listed, but the book was still in great condition. (If it had been a trade paperback edition, then I might have just said “Aw, heck with it, I’ll give her a +1.”)
The thing was too that I wasn’t really that upset about it. Mistakes happen, and it’s not like I paid for the book. With BookMooch you only pay the shipping on what you send out. But the member known as DEWEY not only sent me an email apologizing for the mistake, she felt so bad about it she found my Amazon.Com Wish List through my web site (listed as my home page on the member info section at BookMooch) and sent me one of the items on the list. How nice was that?
It turned out to be a compact disc of music written by classical composer Erik Satie. It was his “GymnopĂ©dies No1-3; Gnossiennes No1-6″ which I had recently added. One of the Gnossiennes and one of the GymnopĂ©dies are used on the “Classical Baby” DVD’s that Nigel loves so much. I really like both pieces, so I decided to add the disc to the Wish List.
It only proves that there still are many caring and generous people out there in the world. Thank you DEWEY!
