Finally, the review! I finished “Strange Itineraries” by Tim Powers about two weeks ago. I just haven’t had the time to comment on it. Part of that was the impact it left on me. It didn’t bowl me over. But then it still left a decent impression on me.
The book is a collection of short stories. It is Powers’ only published collection. He is primarily a novel writer. I think it showed in this collection. A lot of great ideas that needed more time to get fleshed out. There was one story that (to me) screamed the need to be a novel, or even just a novella. Given that Marcia’s relatives from Virginia are coming to town next weekend (actually Thursday), and that my birthday falls in the middle of the week, we celebrated it with Marcia’s family yesterday. It was a scaled down affair, just sandwiches and great macaroni salad from Catherine, and Paula’s famous taco dip.
I bought a case of Sam Adams’ Summer Ale for the affair. I knew it would be too much, but essentially you can only buy beer by the case here in Pennsylvania. As it was, my Mother-In-Law got me a case of 12 bottle of Chapeau Kriek from De Troche. It’s a Belgian cherry lambic. Then Marcia’s Uncle Joe and Grammy gave me a case of Molson Golden!...
