Seven of the eight teams that were expected to make the quarterfinals are in. But no one expected Slovakia and Finland to go undefeated through the round robin. No one expected the Swedes AND the Canadians to both get shutout TWICE. And no one expected Switzerland to not only steal the eighth spot, but to only lose one game on the way to the quarters.
From a personal stand point, I hope the Americans DON’T medal. They don’t deserve to. They have played terrible hockey. They finally started scoring, but it was in the “means nothing” game verse Russia at the end of the round robin, which they still managed to lose. (Kazakhstan had already lost, cementing the Americans fourth place finish in Group B.)
I am rooting for Finland and Slovakia to carry through to the Gold Medal game. It would be very cool to see these two hockey strong countries that are usually considered second tier behind the “Big 5″, take the top two spots. Plus with Marcia being of Slovakian descent, it gives me more reason to root for them.
Here are the match ups:
Sweden vs. Switzerland
USA vs. Finland
Canada vs. Russia
Czech Republic vs. Slovakia
I am not sure how the bracket works out on who would play who in the semis.
