Nigel’s Big Day Favorite Albums - Part 28
Jan 21

At some point last week (can’t remember the day … they all have been running together) Marcia and I watched “Must Love Dogs” starring John Cusak and Diane Lane. As you may already know, this is a romantic comedy. Two other actors that played significant roles were Elizabeth Perkins and Dermot Mulroney.

So what happens? Well, Sarah (Lane) is a fortysomething divorcee who teaches pre-school who’s meddling family (she has MANY siblings) is continuously trying to set her up with men. Her sister Carol (Perkins) especially. Carol even goes as far as putting Sarah into a on-line dating service. Eventually this leads to meeting Jake (Cusak). Thrown into the mix is the charming father of one of Sarah’s students, Bob/Bobby (Mulroney).

Now I don’t mind a good romantic comedy. There are good ones out there. Just because I am a guy doesn’t mean that I don’t enjoy them. Sure, they don’t rank up there with the best in cinematic history, but they are worth watching. But “Must Love Dogs” was not all that great. It wasn’t terrible, mind you. But I had a feeling it wasn’t going to be great fun. The main reason I was willing to give it a try was because of Cusak. He turned out to be about the only thing I honestly liked about it. Another thing that seemed bad was the title because it didn’t play a big role. Neither Lane or Cusak’s characters have dogs, though they do like them. And they borrow dogs for their first meeting.

Maybe those that really, really like romantic comedies would find some great things about this movie.
