Right after writing how much better Nigel was doing with the spitting up, I ate dinner holding Nigel after Marcia fed him. And he spit up twice. We think he might have spit up his dose of Zantac, too. Then a few hours later I was feeding him and he spit up just about everything he ate.
I should have just kept my mouth shut.

My girlfriend has a son who’s 4 months old now, and has suffered severe reflux since birth. She discovered a few things; at 8 weeks old, the zantac was working but not consistently, so she put a little rice cereal in his bottle and his spitting up dramatically decreased tot he point of almost going away. She breastfeeds, and beause of cereal only does 3 to the breast and the rest of the feedings are by bottle with a little cereal added. She found the thicker it was, the more he kept down. I have heard this from other parents too, so it might be something to try.

ps… i subscribe to a ped. website, and he’s got a small article about reflux. HEre’s the link http://www.rogerknapp.com/medical/gi-reflux.htm
You will see that he suggests thickening the formula…
“Some babies are fussy and need an antacid like Tagamet or Zantac. These are safe and OK to give the baby for months. The other way to decrease the spitting up is to thicken the formula. We add Rice or Oatmeal cereal to the formula bottle and cut a larger hole in the nipple. The thicker solution stays in their stomach better and sitting them in a seat upright after the meal helps. Play with the hole size to allow the “heavy slush” to come out of the nipple at the right speed.
Almost every baby “grows” out of this and patients is the main treatment.
Dr. Knapp”
Dr. Brown bottles do have nipples already made with bigger holes. I think because these bottles are so commonly used for colic babies.

Thanks for all the info Jodi. Marcia talked to the doctor about the rice cereal this past appointment, and she said to wait until 4 months old. We don’t plan on waiting that long. Marcia’s sister Paula started Ryan I believe just before he was 3 months old. I don’t know if he had a problem spitting up, but it helped him sleep much, much longer during the night.
One thing Marcia and I do need to do better is keeping Nigel upright after eating. We still have a tendancy to have him laying in our arms.

Poor baby! He’ll grow out of the sickly stage soon I’m sure.

Poor Nigel, and poor Mom and Dad. I wish I could do something to help, but seems like you are getting some sound advice from two very dedicated mommies. I was so fortunate not to have had any problems like this when my kids were babies. I hope things will improve very soon. My prayers are with you all.
