Red Wings 4, Stars 1
I only was able to watch the first period of this game due to feeding Nigel and just being damn tired. But the first period showcased some good hockey. The Stars came out on fire, and luckily for the Wings Chris Osgood was equally hot. At times the Wings were looking a little slow with some sloppy play, but credit the Stars for playing great hockey that would make any team look bad.

But like the usual Wings over the years, even when getting out played, they were patient and silently deadly. They finally got a few good clears and starting bringing the puck into the Stars’ end, and finally found a small mistake to pounce on which happened between Stars’ goalie Marty Turco and Stars’ defenseman Martin Skoula behind their net. This left Mikael Samuelsson wide open in front of the net and Turco on the wrong post. The goal broke the ice while giving the Wings the lead, and you could see the Stars were not moving as fast and making as crisp of passes after.

Hockey Night in Canada - Tuesday Edition
Given the NHL’s Christmas vacation on Saturday (they don’t play on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day), CBC moved their weekend tradition to Tuesday. It caught me off-guard when I heard Bob Cole and Harry Neale last night when Marcia put on the Leafs-Penguins game. Though this is nothing special, I just thought it was cool that they did that.

Pittsburgh Penguins Gambling On New Arena
The state (more correctly, commonwealth) of Pennsylvania has approved the building of slot only casinos. One of them is going to be built in Pittsburgh. And one of the companies hoping to build it (Isle of Capri Casinos, Inc.) has struck a deal in hopes of getting the upper hand in winning the contract. According to this ARTICLE from ESPN’s web site, they have signed a deal with the Penguins that says if they win they contract for the Pittsburgh based casino, they will pay to have a new arena built for the Penguins.

There have been people complaining about this, but why not?! It would save the taxpayers a lot of money, and it’s not like the Pens can afford to build it. And if the state has already approved the casino, then why not have the casino give back to the community. Not only will it bring more jobs by opening a casino, it will save jobs of local Penguins employees (those that wouldn’t move with the franchise if it were to relocate), and probably some of the Mellon Arena employees. Seems like a win-win situation to me.

St. Louis Blues’ Suitor
After a few months on the selling block with one aborted offer, it appears the Laurie family has finally found someone interested in buying their hockey team. And guess where the prospective owner is from? Detroit! You can read ESPN’s ARTICLE from their web site. And people wonder why they call the city Hockeytown.

If the sale actually happens, it would make the Blues the fourth NHL team currently owned by someone from the Detroit area. The other three: Obviously the Ilitch family owns the Wings; Peter Karmanos who owns the Carolina Hurricanes; and Bill Davidson who owns the Tampa Bay Lightning.
