The Wings’ special teams won this game for them. Midway through the second period, with the score tied at 1-1, the Wings took some penalties that resulted in over 2 minutes of a 5-on-3 for the Blue Jackets. The Wings shut them down. The Jackets then had a one-man advantage, but was interupted by taking a penalty, making it a 4-on-4. The Wings then scored just before their last penalty expired, giving them a 2-1 lead, and with a power play yet to come. They then scored on that power play.
The Jackets came back with one. Then Jackets’ Steven Goertzen took a 5 minute major for a boarding call on Andreas Lilja, who looked to severly injure his right knee on the play. Halfway through the power play the Wings scored, and then added another one when the Jackets took another penalty giving the Wings a 5-on-3.

Henrik Zetterberg scores on an incredible move around three Blue Jacket players.
Those special teams put the game out of reach for the Blue Jackets, even in today’s new NHL. Adding to the fun was Henrik Zetterberg who scored a spectacular goal in the third period, showing why he is so important to the Wings’ future.
The game was on OLN, and I was impressed with a few changes. Mike Emerick was the play-by-play guy. Great choice. They still had John Davidson as the analyst. Both Emerick and Davidson did the games on ABC and do a good job.
In the studio, they moved Neil Smith to do a special segment called “View from Above”, given his old GM gig. He came across as much more insightful. It then made room for Pierre McGuire as the threesome at the table, along with Keith Jones and Bill Clement. All good moves for OLN to give themselves more credibility.
