I was introduced to The Cure when I was in high school. I remember it quite vividly. I was loaned “Kiss Me” from a female member of the track team. I thought there were a couple of interesting tunes, but wasn’t really taken by them. I soon realized that The Cure is an acquired taste that I would later acquire.

(From left): Lol Tolhurst (misc. instruments), Porl Thompson (guitar), Roger O’Donnell (keyboards), Robert Smith (vocals, guitar, & keys), Boris Williams (drums), and Simon Gallup (bass & keys).

Most of us know that the strange looking, freaked hair, smudged lipstick wearing leader of the band has to be one of the most melancholy individuals that popular music has ever seen. Of course I refer to Robert Smith. And like some of the others I have posted already, I tend to like strange, darker, moody music. “Pictures of You”, “Prayers for Rain”, and “The Same Deep Water as You” truly fit that bill, and happen to be my favorite tracks. Though I would also add “Fascination Street” and it’s driving bass line.

The album as a whole is very good. The only downfall to my ears is the very long introductions to the songs. The Cure, or should I say Robert Smith, has a habit of making the first two to three minutes of a song an instrumental lead-in. But that is a minor issue since I do like the music. It is more of a production issue.

Gotta admit - this one threw me off. Never would have placed a Cure album on the list.
