At the beginning of the season, I usually take a chance and make a prediction of who I think will win the Stanley Cup. I used to do this all the time with friends in school. One year I actually predicted correctly. That being 1996 when the Colorado Avalanche won the Cup.
The following year I took a lot of heat because I predicted the Philadelphia Flyers to win. They ended up facing the Red Wings in the finals that year. I remember two co-workers threatening to break my legs if I was right two years in a row.
I also got it right in 1998, but that in some respects doesn’t count. I don’t think more then 10% of the hockey writers and fans around the world didn’t predict the Wings to repeat.
This year I am going to go with the Philadelphia Flyers again. They finally have a steady goaltender, and the changes they have made improved an already great team. I think they will be facing either the Calgary Flames or the Vancouver Canucks in the finals.
Of course, I hope I am wrong and the Wings win the Cup.
