New NHL Obstruction Rules “The Girl in the Glass” by Jeffrey Ford
Sep 26

I got to thinking a couple of weeks ago about my favorite albums. I had been pulling out quite a few and listening to them. So I decided to post about them. So here is the first installment.

Soundgarden - “Superunknown”

Tracks:

  1. Let Me Drown
  2. My Wave
  3. Fell on Black Days
  4. Mailman
  5. Superunknown
  6. Head Down
  7. Black Hole Sun
  8. Spoonman
  9. Limo Wreck
  10. The Day I Tried to Live
  11. Kickstand
  12. Fresh Tendrils
  13. 4th of July
  14. Half
  15. Like Suicide

This remains, in my mind, one of the best straight rock albums ever recorded. It is 11 years old, and even with the move out of grunge, it still doesn’t sound dated to my ears. (Of course, I haven’t been listening a whole lot to new artists other then System of a Down and The Mars Volta.) What helps this cause is Chris Cornell’s vocals. Like my feelings for the album, I feel he remains one of the best vocalists in rock today (now with Audioslave).

(From left): Kim Thayil (guitar), Matt Cameron (drums), Chris Cornell (vocals, guitar), and Ben Shepherd (bass)

For those of you that listen to rock radio stations, you have probably heard “Black Hole Sun” and “Spoonman”, because they played those a lot. “BHS” still is a favorite of mine despite this fact. (Some songs get way overplayed on radio.) As a whole though, I think the album really fits together really well. The order really works well for me, and there are some real nice transitions between some songs. And the opening track and closing tracks are just about perfect. Again, my opinion.

I think the band’s sound was unique and they really hit their stride on this album. Kim Thayil is rather unorthodox at times, and that is what makes him so good for the band. Matt Cameron probably gives his best performance on this album as well, and shows why he is probably underrated. And Ben Shepherd is a very competent bass player and brought a punk attitude to the sound. Too bad these guys broke up. As I mentioned, Cornell is now with Audioslave. Matt Cameron is now the drummer for Pearl Jam.
