Last night a group of us headed over to the Bethlehem Brew Works for my birthday. Yes, we got a very early start. The thing is that Musikfest invades B’hem for 10 days, and it usually straddles my birthday. And it is nearly impossible to get a table at any restaurant during that time without having to wait a couple of hours.
So the group included Marcia (of course, our designated driver), David, Catherine, Mike, Paula, Shannon, Ed, Chloe, and Uncle Joe. The food, like always, was very good. That is part of the reason I like the Brew Works. They have a good range of dishes, from cheaper burgers to more higher end dishes, and everything I have ever had has ranged from good to great. I stuck with the Bessemer Bratwurst (a lot of dishes named after steel industry terms on the menu), with red cabbage and potato cakes. When the plate was set in front of me David made the comment, “So can you tell who is Polish?” As far as the beer, I stuck with their ESB, which is very good. It was a bit disappointing though, because they had a small menu to choose from. Usually during the summer they have their Zomberbier, which I really like. But that was still in the fermenting tanks (which were literally 10 feet from our table).
After dinner, most of us headed down to the Steelgaarden. This is bar that is done up like a coffee bar. Actually, it looks a bit like “Central Perk” from the tv show “Friends”, just with a steel industry motif. Of course it is a bit darker in there, too. Their beer menu is exclusively Belgian beers, along with what the Brew Works has on tap. I wanted to go there just so I could have a Belle-vue Kriek, which is an excellent cherry lambic.
It was a good time. It was especially fun to chat about hockey with Mike. It’s been a long time since any of us have had anything exciting to talk about when it comes to the NHL.
