A funny, but very cool thing happened this weekend.
Marcia and I were in a Barnes & Noble on Saturday afternoon buying a book that we didn’t want to wait for from amazon.com, or find cheaper elsewhere. As we are standing in line to pay, we come across the bargain table. I noticed quite a few copies in hardback of book four of the “Otherland” series by Tad Williams. I knew David had all four books in the series, but one was a book club edition that he wanted to replace with a publisher hardback copy. French Open champion Justine Henin-Hardenne has lost her first round match to Eleni Daniilidou of Greece, 7-6 (10-8), 6-2, 7-5. Now this IS a major upset. I had been reading how some thought that she could go all the way this year. She had made the finals at Wimbledon in 2001, but now had a much better game, especially her forehand. So far the first round has not seen any MAJOR upsets. Many players have their first round match today. But there were a few seeded players that lost their first round match yesterday. The most poignant was probably Mariano Puerta of Argentina, seeded 16th in the tourney, ranked 9th in the World. He had a typical Wimbledon outing for a French Open finalist. On the women’s side, 10th seeded Patty Schnyder of Switzerland lost her first round match.
