Hockey Quote “Assassin’s Apprentice” by Robin Hobb
Jun 13

The ol’ computer is having problems lately. Actually this REALLY sucks, since it is a brand new computer! Anyway, because I didn’t have the link at first to login from Marcia’s laptop I was not able to post anything this weekend. So here is my “catchin’ up” post.

Phantoms Win Calder Cup
The Philadelphia Phantoms swept the Chicago Wolves in the Calder Cup Finals this past Friday. The Calder Cup is the championship trophy of the American Hockey League, the top minor hockey league in North America. The Phantoms are the Flyers affiliate.

This was the second Calder Cup for the Phantoms who won in 1998, which happened to be only their second season of existence. The big star was goalie Antero Niittymaki. He was stellar during the season and playoffs, and only gave up four goals in the Finals. This is hope for the Flyers. They have been struggling to find a goalie to fit in with their Stanley Cup winning caliber team. Along with Robert Esche, Niittyamaki looks to turn those fortunes around.

Unofficial Pizza Night
We had an unofficial Pizza Night so to speak at Paula and Rick’s this past Friday. Many were out and about, and the original host didn’t have central air, so we canceled it and had a smaller gathering. The highlight of the evening was of course Ryan. He seems to be one happy little boy. I didn’t hear even a small whimper out of him. And he really enjoyed playing with my ear while I was holding him.

NewsRadio DVD
Finally got it (after a bunch of BS from the US Postal Service …. see below). I never watched this on a regular basis, meaning purposely sitting down to watch it when it was on. But then I never turned it off if I came across it. So the first two seasons were released on DVD. It took them about two years to finally get it together. It literally was listed on Amazon.Com for two years saying that it was not released yet but you could pre-order it. It has been a lot of fun watching them again, or seeing episodes that I had not seen.

US Postal System
So I ordered “NewsRadio” on DVD and a book that I wanted. Got confirmation from Amazon.Com that it was ready for pick-up by a courier from their Louisville warehouse. It took two days to get to Cincinnati. Kind of slow, but depending on the time of day and allowing time for a truck to show up, it seems acceptable.

But then the idiocy started. It then took 12 DAYS to get from Cincy to Philly!! OK, so there was a holiday weekend, but that still only subtracts 2 days. The tracking kept showing it as in transit to Philly. I started contacting the USPS, because based on past experiences, I knew there was a problem. I had three email into them before they responded!! Customer service my ass!

Obviously the package showed up. On Saturday. Oh, and it was damaged, too. Big surprise.

Poker Night with the Duncans
Andy and Yvonne came over on Saturday night. We went out to eat at the Sumney, a nice American/Irish bistro down the road from us. That was mine and Marcia’s second time there. Both times we have had good experiences, and the same waitress.

After we got back, we broke out Marcia’s new poker chips and played Texas Hold ‘Em for a couple of hours. It was fun, but obviously lacking in some suspense, since it wasn’t real money.

Pink Floyd Reunites for Live 8
Now this is a band that realizes how petty in-band fights can be. The four members of their heyday (Gilmour, Waters, Mason, and Wright) put aside their differences to perform at a special concert in tribute to someone that died, being a friend of the band. They have done it again, agreeing to perform at the Live 8 performance in London. Gilmour was quoted (not exactly here) as saying their problems seem little compared to the problems of the world. And if them getting back together on stage to play a few songs can help make a difference, then it was a no-brainer for the band.
