You can read the ARTICLE from ESPN. The suit is being presented by an amateur hockey team that feels the spirit of the Stanley Cup should be brought back, since the NHL won’t be awarding it this year. The team originally were going to offer to play for it, but then they realized that more competive teams should play.

The Stanley Cup originally was to be awarded to the best amateur team in Canada. The actual name of the Cup is the Dominion of Canada Challenge Cup. It’s more popular moniker comes from the man that bought and donated it, Frederick Arthur whose title was Lord Stanley of Preston.

You can read more about the History of the Cup on the NHL’s website. The only thing is that it’s short on the early history, of when the NHL didn’t exist. There were a few leagues throughout Canada that played for the Cup. Eventually the National Hockey Association (later called the National Hockey League) took sole possession of the Cup after the last of the other leagues folded.

I seriously don’t see this getting anywhere. (Though it would be cool to see a big Canadian wide tournament for it.) If I remember correctly, which is probably chronicled on the NHL history page, and in a book that I have celebrating 100 years of the Cup, the benefactors of the Cup have given the NHL total control of the “tournament” that awards it.
