“Spectrum” - Billy Cobham “The Great American Novel” by Philip Roth
Apr 07

This was another one of my recent “Christmas” purchases. The self-titled debut of the project called Gordian Knot.

1. Galois
2. Code/Anitcode
3. Reflections
4. Megrez
5. Singularity
6. Redemption’s Way
7. Komm Süsser Tod, Komm Sel’ge
8. Rivers Dancing
9. Srikara Tal
10. Grace (hidden track)

The mastermind and leader of this project is bassist and stick player Sean Malone. He has been a studio musician most of his life, though he spent some time with the prog metal band Cynic in the mid 90’s. Given his background, and the other stick players on the album (Trey Gunn and John Myung of Dream Theater) I totally expected a chops album. Boy was I wrong, and happily so.

The album is a very song orientated. Sure, there is some great playing on it. But now I see what all the hub-bub is about regarding this album. The range of styles goes from harder rock, with a rather metal sound, to very experimental and atmospheric with even a hint of ethnic sound. It is quite a treat.
