Both the Tigers and the Phillies started their seasons off on the right foot, both taking the season opener. The Tigers took care of the Kansas City Royals with the help of Dimitri Young’s record tying day. Young hit three home runs to tie a Major League record for most homers hit on opening day. Karl Rhodes did it for the Cubs back in 1999, and George Bell for the Blue Jays in 1988.
The Tigers built up a 5-0 lead after three innings, chasing Royals’ starter (and former Tiger) José Lima from the game. The Royals got one back in the top of the 5th, but the Tigers came back for 3 more in the bottom half of the inning. Young’s third homer in the bottom of the 8th capped off the 11-2 victory.
As I said, I am not much of a basketball fan these days. But I wanted to say congrats to the Lady Spartans for bringing down the mighty Lady Vols of Tennessee, with the all-time winningest coach in college basketball history (both men’s and women’s), Pat Summit. Michigan State will play Baylor for the National Championship on Tuesday night.
The guys should get some props, too. They made it to the Final Four during a season that appeared that they wouldn’t. It was the mens team’s fourth trip their in the last 8 years. Unfortunately they got knocked out by North Carolina on Saturday night.
Today is Opening Day in 10 Major League cities. The beginning of the baseball season. I don’t think I have looked forward to a baseball season this much since 1985, when the Tigers started the defense of their World Series Championship of’84. Of course this year’s anticipation might have something to do with not having a hockey season.
“My two teams” both start off at home this year. The Tigers will take on the Kansas City Royals, and the Phillies will become the first opponents of the newly relocated Washington Nationals.
