Today marks the 25th Anniversary of what is still considered (even by Canadians) as the biggest upset in the history of hockey. On February 22, 1980, the US hockey team defeated the Soviet Union 4-3 in the first game of the medal round during the Olympics in Lake Placid, New York.

This victory seemed to have done so many things. It popularized the sport here in the United States. Because of this victory, when the US won the 1996 World Cup, the “world championship” using NHL rules, it wasn’t a big surprise.
