It’s official. The NHL season has been canceled. The first time in history that a professional sports league in North America has cancelled an entire season because of a labor dispute.

Rumor floating around was that the owners moved their cap offer up to $44.7 million. The players obviously didn’t accept.

Following is a letter from NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman to NHL fans. My replies are in RED ITALIC.

I now have read that the owners were the ones that sparked the players’ union acceptance of a salary cap. I am not an economic or business major, but the point that the owners gave into was the linkage between player costs and revenue. I don’t understand how it works, but it was a huge step to the players to negotiate further with the premise of a cap.

The sides are still about $6.5 apart. The players since have dropped from $52 million to $49 million. The owners have only budged a fraction, going from $42 million to $42.5 million.

Hopefully they will talk some more and get something done soon. I am sure no one connected to the NHL wants to sit through another lock-out next season.
