As may be known already, the NHL Players’ Union took a HUGE step in helping get the sides closer to agreeing to a deal. Yesterday during negotiations, the players agreed to a salary cap. Their number was $52 million. That is $12 million more then the owners want. But given the added 24% rollback in salary that players have agreed to, that would only put 8 teams over the $40 million mark.
My thinking is, that if the players are willing to a cap, AND a rollback, the owners need to budge on the ceiling. If they don’t, then they truly have no one to blame but themselves for a continued stalemate.
By the way, no matter if a deal was struck or not, it appears that the league would still cancel the season.
