“Aristotle was not Belgian, the principle of Buddhism is not ‘every man for himself’, and the London Underground is not a political movement. Those are all mistakes, Otto. I looked them up.”

Yesterday I saw a headline on a few internet news sites stating that former basketball star Michael Jordan’s brother was being deployed to the Middle East. Army Command Sgt. Maj. James Jordan, nearing his 30th year in the Armed Services, is extending his tenure beyond the mandatory retirement to serve a one year tour of duty in Iraq as part of the war effort.

I have two things to say about this headline. Fisrt, I wish Sgt. Maj. Jordan a save return to his family, and I wish his family the best during this time where I am sure they will be extremely worried.

Second, why is it that he gets headlines just because of his brother? I think that is a bit rude and condesending of the other hundreds of thousands of men and women...

Today is my Mom’s birthday. We celebrated it on Saturday, while Marcia and I were in town. It is rather cool how we have always come out to Detroit to spend Thanksgiving with my family, and we are there long enough to celebrate her birthday with her.

Happy Birthday Mom!

Here are some pictures from our visit to Detroit.

The trip from Detroit to home went better than expected. We had been checking out the Weather Channel and were being told that we could expect rain through Michigan and then most of Pennsylvania, mostly the eastern part of the state. As it turned out, we got rain and snow flurries during the first 100 miles, but had sunny skies the rest of the way. It made for a good drive home.

The only problem was that I came down with a cold. I was sneezing quite a bit on the trip. And when we finally sat down after doing some unpacking and reading mail, I was feeling really lousy. But Marcia and I sat down and watched a movie after ordering subs from a local deli, and just relaxed. Glad I had the cold on the drive home and not during our...

Had to smuggle my sister Jenn into the United States today. OK, so not really, but we might have had to. Marcia and I usually like to go to the Tunnel BBQ in Windsor, Ontario once in a while on our trips to see my family. We brought along Jenn this time. Since we that have grown up in Detroit had been used to, we never needed any ID going over the border into Canada. At least it was that way in the laxed days before 9-11. So we forgot to remind Jenn to bring a birth certificate (passport is acceptable, too). Basically, you need to forms of ID, one has to be a picture form and one has to be a form proving your citizenship.

The lady at Customs on the Canadian side read us the riot act. And she was not one for just accepting answers...

Marcia and I, along with my sister Jenn, headed out into the shopping masses yesterday. We went late (about 1:00 pm), and the few stores that we went to were not very crowded at all. There was no mass hysteria. The roads around the malls though were another story. We really didn’t do any shopping. It was mostly to start getting ideas, and one of the stores was were Marcia gets one of her favorite hot sauces for tacos. Though I did get one gift for my Mom that I came across.

We started the trip out though with lunch first. Headed to downtown Detroit, to a part of the city known as Greektown. It really just consists of one block of Greek restaurants, the Greektown Casino, and a very old and beautiful Catholic church. Like...

As one can imagine, we sat down for Thanksgiving dinner yesterday. (What a stretch, eh?) We had a pretty good size group. My Grandma Glonek, my Grandpa and Grandma Fabirkiewicz, my sister Jenn, my brother Todd and his girlfriend Angie, then of course my parents. We had most of the usual grub, and like always, it was excellent! Especially the sausage and mashed potatoes. And it was all very filling. But would it really be Thanksgiving if it wasn’t? It was all followed by apple and pumpkin pie, which we all wanted but had to force down. ; )

The biggest event of the day though happened when Todd and Angie arrived. Because Angie was showing off a new piece of jewelry. Todd had proposed to her before coming over for dinner!...

To those celebrating Thanksgiving today, may you have a safe and happy holiday!

Our trip into Detroit was miserable. It rained the whole drive. And I am not stretching the truth. Sure, it was not as hard at certain points. But it DID rain the whole trip. This added an hour and a half to the drive. YIKES!! We usually can make the trip in under 10 hours, and we clocked in at over 11 hours this time.

There were no major back-ups at all. Traffic was moving along the whole time, just much slower due to the bad weather. The only traffic we hit was rush hour in Detroit. (We normally miss this when getting here under 10 hours.)

We got some sleet as we got closer to Michigan. By the time we pulled into...

Well, we are heading out (too damn early if you ask me) to Detroit to see my family for Thanksgiving. I am looking forward to seeing everyone again. It has been too long.

Interesting developement, the toll collectors for the turnpike have gone on strike. So the Turnpike Authority has declared that everyone drives for free today. That will be a nice chunk of change we won’t have to cough up.
