A tribute (in title only) to the late, great Bob Talbert
He was a columnist for the Detroit Free Press. Originally from the south (he referred to himself as “Bubba”), he took the Detroit area by storm with his witty articles. Every Monday morning, his column was titled like my post. It was just a bunch of random thoughts, much like I have been doing with posts. And it was geared to moaning about it being Monday again. Just about every other Monday, I think about that title. Talbert died in 1999, and I know a lot of people in Detroit that still miss him.
Arsenal Finally Loses
I really don’t have the opportunity to follow the English FA Premiership as close as I would like to, but I noticed that Arsenal lost this week. They had a stretch of 49 FA matches without a lose (they had a few draws). Now in some respects, I don’t mind seeing this. If I am a fan of any FA team, it is London’s other big team, Chelsea. But Arsenal lost to Manchester United. And backers of ALL London teams band together against ManU.
Sox Keep Winning
The Red Sox are two games up on the Cardinals in the World Series. It is kind of surprising, but then again not. The Cardinals finished with the best record in baseball this year, winning 105 games. In the last 80 years, only three NL teams have won more; ‘98 Braves (106), ‘75 Reds (108), and the ‘42 Cardinals (106). (The ‘43 and ‘44 Cardinals won 105 games.) And St. Louis boasts one of the most powerful line-ups, equal probably only to the Yankees. But on the other hand, the Red Sox have been on fire since the All-Star break. And given their comeback against the Yankees, their confidence is showing through. I feel the Cardinals will at least take one game at home, and may even step it up enough to make sure they don’t lose the thing at home. Which would be cool for Sox fans anyway.
More NHL Talks …… Soon?
The NHLPA top dog Bob Goodenow will meet with the player reps of the 30 teams on November 2nd. This will be a day after the players miss their third paycheck. I am hoping that this meeting might spawn some ideas or at least some arguments about what is being done. There just has to be players out there that are more than willing to make some of the concessions that the owners are asking for, therefore sparking a new direction in the talks, leading to an agreement. Of course that is being too optimistic.
