Catching up on the tennis world. While we were in Dover, DE on vacation, I got to watch the Tennis Masters Series event in Cincinnati, officially known as the Southern and Western Financial Group Masters. It pitted 10th seeded Lleyton Hewitt versus 11th seeded Andre Agassi. Both players have been struggling a bit as of late, considering they both were ranked number one in the world rather recently (that is until the Federer-Roddick Show took over). But they managed to regain their form and make the finals.
The first set saw a very controlled Agassi. Serving well, using good ground strokes. Hewitt on the other hand was making many unforced errors, but keeping serve. That was until the 9th game when Agassi broke. He then turned around and served out the set, winning 6-4.
The second set was the exact same thing. But a role reversal. Hewitt was showing great control while Agassi was making the unforced errors. This led to Hewitt breaking Agassi in the 9th game, then serving out to win the second set 6-4 as well.
The third set saw the momentum switch as Agassi picked his game back up and saw Hewitt trying to do too much to catch up. Eventually Agassi won the set and match on a double fault by Hewitt, finishing the set at 6-2.
This was Agassi’s 17th Masters’ Shield (the trophy awarded for all Masters Series Events). That six more then second on the list (which I can’t find, but I believe it was either Ivan Lendl or Pete Sampras).
