Vacation Review - Part Two “The Five People You Meet in Heaven” by Mitch Albom
Aug 16

One of the two books I finished while on vacation was “Sea Dragon Heir” by Storm Constantine. This is the first book of “The Chronicles of Magravandias Trilogy”.

The book has a rather gothic nature to it. The Palindrakes, rulers of Caradore (as the title would suggest) used to worship the old sea dragons. The emperor of Magravandias conquered them, killed the king, and then made Valraven the First denounce his throne and take up the worship of Magradore, the god of fire (which is the power of Magravandias). The queen makes Valraven swear that he will never let his male heirs know of the past, while herself makes sure the women do, yet keep it hidden from the men. It leads to an encounter between the two familes, the marriages, the relationships, the affairs, and all the chaos that can come of it.

The book really captured me at the start. It took on a different light when the main character switched from one character to another. Yet it still was intriguing. But nearing the end, it became jumbled and non-exciting. I got through, but wasn’t pleased with the ending. I started to read the next book (”The Crown of Silence”), but I didn’t get a chance to read for a couple of days and didn’t find myself craving to go back to it. I would like to eventually since one of the bigger characters from the first book, his outcome is shrouded and unknown (supposed for dead by others). The next book picks up his story, at least at the start, and is interesting. But overall it wasn’t screaming for me to pick it up every moment I had to read. I will eventually finish it though.
