In what turned out to look like three different games, team USA lost it’s opener of the World Cup of Hockey this evening to Canada in Montreal. The final score was 2-1. The first period and the beginning of the second looked to be “a game between an NHL team and a college team” as ESPN analyst Jeremy Roenick pointed out. Canada led the charge while out shooting the US 22 to 6 in the first half of the game. They also created 18 scoring chances, while the US had NONE! But with the play of Robert Esche in goal for the US, Canada could only garner a 1-0 lead after the first period.
No new cast : (
But I have only three more weeks in a cast!! : ) The doctor liked hearing that I have not been feeling any pain from the tendon when putting weight on it the last few weeks. So he feels that just another three weeks will do. That will put me on the better side of the typical cast duration for a ruptured achilles (usually 12 to 15 weeks). After this cast I will be wearing a brace for 6 to 12 weeks that will allow my foot movement. But it will limited to keep the angle between the top of my foot and my shin at 90 degrees or greater. Meaning, if I get a cramp in my right calf, I won’t be able to move my foot to that “maximum” position to stretch it out.
The World Cup of Hockey is about to start. I will be watching what games I can with great interest. Not only because I like hockey. But this might be the only time we get to see the NHL stars play this year.

This will be the second World Cup that Hockey is doing. The first was in 1996, where the US defeated Canada two games to one in the Finals. The World Cup grew out of the old Canada Cup tournament that used to be held every few years. The idea originally in making it the “World Cup” was to set it up much like Soccer. Where the World Cup is contested for every four years, two years offset of the Olympics....

I just can’t seem to make up my mind with books these days. I think it is because that I have been wanting something a bit different. So I put aside “The Jackal of Nar” (which was interesting, but I just wasn’t getting hooked). Now I am reading “How Few Remain” by Harry Turtledove. It’s an alternate history novel. The “what if?” is the Confederate States won a few battles in 1862 and win the Civil War. They become their own nation, and in 1881, because of the purchase of two territories from Mexico, the Confederacy goes to war with the US again.
Marcia and I watched the TV mini-series (on DVD) “Merlin” yesterday. It stars Sam Neill as Merlin, Miranda Richardson as Queen Mab, and Martin Short as Frick.

I have been made familiar with the legends of King Arthur just recently. I read a book about King Arthur showing up in modern day New York and running for mayor (”Knight Life” by Peter David). Did some research before reading it. This of course concentrated on Merlin himself.
The acting was good. Given who was in the cast, it should have been. The stand...

OK, I have always liked the Winter Olympics better because we get to see a lot of sports that are not that popular here in the US, or broadcast much, if ever. But there are a few in the Summer Olympics. And team handball is one of them.
I have seen this sport a few times over the years, but never got to see more than highlights. Today I watched the men’s Gold medal match between Croatia and Germany. It was an exciting game, and both Marcia and I got into, cheering for Croatia (because she’s a big fan of Croatia’s BIG tennis star Goran Ivanisevic). Croatia eventually came out...

A good portion of the Pizza Night gang gathered at Joie’s yesterday to renew the ritual. It was the first one that Marcia and I have been to in a couple of weeks. Like usual, Joie served up more than pizza. We were doing a “Salad Days of Summer” type thing. So we had some picnic like fare along with the pizza. Good stuff, too. The potato salad and chicken salad were really good! And so was the pizza. ; )
Ahhh ….. another day, another CD review. ; ) Today it’s “ISDN” by the Future Sound of London. Yes, it’s another electronica project. And yes, it also has a rather minimalistic album cover. You can probably guess where they are from, or at least the country. Though they base themselves in London, England, they are both from Manchester. FSOL (as they are referred to as) are Garry “Gaz” Cobain and Brian Dougans.

“ISDN” was not actually intended to be a real full length release from the group. Just before the release of their second album “Lifeforms”, they had been doing live broadcasts to different...

It appears that hockey is not going to be played anytime soon after the World Cup. Reports of yesterday’s meeting between NHL owners and the NHLPA is that they are growing farther apart. Each is accusing the other that they had it planned for years to force the lock-out to get the other side to break. I think it’s a bit ridiculous for either side to be saying that in public. Makes them all sound like a bunch of millionaire babies. And yes, I mean BOTH groups.
The biggest thing has been the players refusal to give in to a salary cap. And each of the six proposals that the owners laid out to them were seen as caps by the PA. In some repects they are right (from what I have read). But both sides need to realize that...

This was another CD that I purchased through gifts that I received for my birthday. They are an electronica project from Michigan, and are a trio of sorts. Officially documented as Kevin Hayes, with Kirk Marrison and Clark Rehberg.

I got this from Amazon.Com as well, and was a little miffed about it. It was $10.99, and it’s an EP! Only 31 minutes long. (I didn’t know that when ordering.) It didn’t help that I got an Autechre double CD release for $14.99 in the same order. But my frustration quickly washed away when I started listening to it. What a fantastic album!
They remind me a bit of the Icelandic electronica/ambient/pop project...
